What is output VAT?
Published
Output VAT is the value added tax a business collects from its customers on taxable sales. You collect it on behalf of ZATCA, not for yourself.
The equations
Output VAT = Taxable sales × 15%Gross amount = Net amount × 1.15Net payable to the authority = Output VAT − Deductible input VAT
Al-Waha's figures for the open tax period
Taxable sales = SAR 230,000Output VAT = 230,000 × 15% = SAR 34,500Input VAT = SAR 19,300Net payable = 34,500 − 19,300 = SAR 15,200
The entry
A sales invoice of SAR 34,500 including tax:
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts receivable | 34,500 | |
| Sales | 30,000 | |
| Output VAT | 4,500 |
Output VAT is a liability account with a credit balance. The money is in your bank, and it is not yours.
The most damaging error: treating it as revenue
Across Al-Waha's full quarter:
Gross collected = SAR 529,000Actual revenue = SAR 460,000Output VAT = SAR 69,000
A business recording 529,000 as revenue sees:
| Correct | After the error | |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 460,000 | 529,000 |
| Gross profit | 192,000 | 261,000 |
| Gross margin | 41.7% | 49.3% |
| Net profit | 27,250 | 96,250 |
Hiring, expansion, and drawing decisions then get built on SAR 96,250 of profit that does not exist, and the truth arrives on filing day, when a payment is demanded that nothing was set aside for.
When output VAT becomes due
It attaches to the date of supply and issuance of the tax invoice, not the date of collection. The practical consequence: you may pay tax on an invoice you have not been paid for.
Al-Waha's SAR 96,750 of receivables includes output VAT already declared but not yet collected. This is one of the main causes of liquidity pressure in businesses selling on credit, and it argues for setting the tax cash aside at collection rather than at filing.
The practical fix
The simplest and most effective rule: separate tax cash from operating cash. On every collection, move the tax portion to a separate account or ring-fence it in the ledger. A business that spends from the gross figure discovers the gap at filing.
Cases where 15% output VAT does not apply
| Case | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Zero-rated supplies (such as exports) | Declared at 0% and still counted within taxable supplies |
| Exempt supplies | Outside the calculation, and they affect input VAT recovery |
| Sales outside the scope of application | Assessed under place-of-supply rules |
Misclassifying any of these changes the return and requires correction.
Frequently asked questions
Is output VAT an expense?
Neither an expense nor revenue. It is a liability: an amount collected on the authority's behalf and paid over to it.
What if I miscalculated the tax on an invoice?
It is corrected with a credit or debit note depending on the direction of the error, and the return is adjusted under the applicable correction rules.
Do I charge VAT to an unregistered customer?
Yes. Liability depends on your being registered and the supply being taxable, not on the customer's registration status. The difference is that an unregistered customer cannot deduct it.
What is the difference between output VAT and sales?
Sales are your revenue. Output VAT is an additional amount collected on top of it that does not belong to you.
