Zakat is a religious obligation and a pillar of Islam; the results here are indicative estimates only, not an official zakat assessment or a fatwa. The business estimate does not implement all additions, deductions, adjusted-profit rules, or the minimum (adjusted net profit) and maximum (equity) zakat-base provisions in the Zakat Regulations, and does not produce an official zakat liability — consult ZATCA or a licensed Saudi zakat adviser for business zakat. The default nisab (2,142﷼) is an indicative value at 15 July 2026 based on 595g of silver and changes with metal prices; entering the current nisab is preferred. For religious matters, individuals should consult a qualified authority (fatwa).
Method and formula

How zakat is calculated

Zakatable assets are pooled and compared against nisab. If they reach it and a full lunar (or Gregorian) year has passed, zakat is due at 2.5%.

Personal zakat

Add up your zakatable wealth (cash, gold and silver, trade goods, tradable shares, collectible receivables) and compare it with the nisab.

zakat = total zakatable assets × 2.5%

If the total is below nisab, no zakat is due. Example: 120,000 → 3,000

Business zakat (official method)

The authority calculates the zakat base by the sources-of-funds method: additions minus deductions, subject to an adjusted-net-profit floor and an equity ceiling. This tool gives a simplified net-current-assets estimate only.

zakat base ≈ current assets − current liabilities

The tool above gives a simplified estimate; the official base is derived from the financial statements per ZATCA's regulations.

Quick guide

Understanding zakat in Saudi Arabia

The authority responsible for collecting zakat from taxpayers (companies and establishments) is the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority. Personal zakat on individual wealth is paid by the person directly, following Islamic guidance.

What personal wealth is zakatable

Cash and bank balances, gold and silver (with a scholarly difference over worn jewelry), trade goods and inventory at market value, shares and funds bought to trade, and receivables likely to be collected from a solvent debtor. A primary residence, personal car and work tools are not zakatable.

The question of debts you owe

ZATCA's individual zakat guidance states that the payer does not deduct the debts they owe and pays zakat on their wealth in full. For that reason we made the debt deduction optional and off by default; if you enable it, it is an estimate that does not reflect ZATCA's position.

Gold vs silver nisab

The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, and its value in riyals changes daily with metal prices. ZATCA uses the lower of the two for cash and trade goods — usually silver, since it is cheaper and more generous to the poor. Update the nisab value in the calculator to today's silver price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Zakat on wealth is a quarter of a tenth, i.e. 2.5% for a lunar (Hijri) year. If calculated over a Gregorian year it is about 2.5777%, because the solar year is longer than the lunar one (365 ÷ 354 × 2.5%).

The nisab is the minimum amount at which zakat becomes due, valued at 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. For cash and trade goods the lower of the two is used, usually silver. Its value in riyals changes with metal prices.

Zakat is due when wealth reaches the nisab and a full lunar year (hawl) has passed while it remained in your ownership above nisab. If it drops below nisab during the year, the hawl is generally interrupted.

Add up your zakatable wealth (cash, gold and silver, trade goods, tradable shares, collectible receivables); if it reaches nisab and the hawl has passed, the zakat is 2.5% of the total. Use the "Personal zakat" mode above.

ZATCA's individual zakat guidance states that the payer pays zakat on their wealth in full and does not deduct debts. So the debt deduction is optional and off by default here; if you enable it, it is a personal estimate.

ZATCA computes the business zakat base by the "sources of funds" method: base = additions (capital, retained earnings, reserves, provisions, long-term liabilities, adjusted profit) minus deductions (net fixed assets, long-term investments, etc.), with the base not less than adjusted net profit and not more than equity, then 2.5%. The calculator gives an indicative, simplified estimate only and does not produce an official zakat liability; consult a licensed Saudi zakat adviser.

Scholars differ: some hold that worn jewelry is zakatable at its market value, others do not. Gold held as savings or for sale is zakatable without notable dispute once it reaches nisab.

If shares are bought to trade, their full market value is zakatable at 2.5%. If held as a long-term investment, the company's zakatable assets are what is zakatable, and ZATCA may collect zakat from the listed company.

No. A primary residence, personal car, work tools and used furniture are not zakatable. But property or vehicles held for sale (trade goods) are zakatable at their value.

Establishments file the zakat return with ZATCA within the statutory period after the financial year-end (typically 120 days). For the official current deadlines and thresholds, refer to the ZATCA website.

No, it is an educational tool with official sources cited and general Islamic rules. It does not replace a qualified fatwa, ZATCA's own ZAKATY calculator, or official zakat filing. For special cases, consult a specialist.
