What is business zakat in Saudi Arabia?

Published

Definition

Business zakat in Saudi Arabia is a religious obligation and a statutory duty, with annual returns filed to ZATCA. It applies to the share owned by Saudi and GCC nationals in the business (the foreign share is subject to corporate income tax - its page). The core rate applied is 2.5% of the zakat base, with certain activity-specific considerations.

The zakat base is not net profit

This is the single most important point, and the most common source of misunderstanding:

Accounting net profit ← the annual income statement figureZakat base ← a different figure computed by different logic

The base is built, in very simplified terms, on equity plus added funding sources (like provisions and certain loans) less what is deducted under the rules (fixed assets, projects under construction, investments in already-zakated entities), and compared to an alternative basis - adjusted net profit - with the higher taken per the authority's rules.

The practical result: a profitable business may show a zakat base considerably above its profit, and a loss-making one may still have a base owed under the adjusted-net-profit alternative. Relying on "2.5% of net profit" is a wrong calculation.

Filing

  • Annual, submitted through the authority's portal within the statutory window after fiscal year-end.
  • Built on the financial statements prepared under SOCPA-endorsed standards - then adjustments and base rules applied.
  • Paid through SADAD as with other filings.
  • Joint ventures between Saudi/GCC and foreign owners: zakat on the Saudi/GCC share and corporate income tax on the foreign share - on the same entity.

Frequently asked questions

Is zakat on inventory only, or all assets?

The base isn't built line by line that way - it is a top-down formula on equity plus added funding less specified deductions, and inventory is not a deduction. See the authority's base rules or your accountant.

A loss-making business - does it pay zakat?

It may still owe a base under the higher-of-two-methods principle - a loss does not automatically eliminate the base.

Relationship to VAT?

No direct relationship - two independent systems. The accrual-basis statements (with sound monthly/quarterly VAT filings) are the source of the annual zakat return.
