Corporate income taxFor non-Saudi, non-GCC ownership shares
Withholding taxOn specified payments to non-residents

CustomsImport, export, and duties

Practical touchpoints for a small business

  1. VAT registration: mandatory once taxable supplies exceed SAR 375,000 a year; voluntary from SAR 187,500.
  2. Returns: quarterly at SAR 40 million of supplies or below, monthly above it, due by the end of the month following the period.
  3. E-invoicing: invoices generated through a compliant system, then integrated with the Fatoora platform according to the applicable wave.
  4. Payment: through SADAD using the bill number issued from the authority's portal.
  5. Objection and correction: formal channels exist for objecting to assessments and correcting returns, and correcting before discovery is always the stronger position.

The errors that surface at audit

ErrorWhy it surfaces easily
Book sales that don't match e-invoicing platform dataThe authority sees e-invoicing data directly
Input VAT deducted without valid tax invoicesDeduction documents are the first thing requested
Crossing SAR 40 million without switching to monthly filingThe switch is an automatic obligation, not something the authority prompts
Unexplained gaps between the return and the financial statementsReconciling the two sources is the basis of any audit

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ZATCA and GAZT?

GAZT was the former General Authority of Zakat and Tax. It merged with Customs in 2021 to become ZATCA with the current, broader mandate.

Does a small business deal with ZATCA even if not VAT-registered?

Yes, if it is subject to zakat or imports goods. But the broadest day-to-day interaction for small businesses is VAT and e-invoicing.

Where do I verify official information?

Directly on zatca.gov.sa. Guides and requirements are updated periodically, and any figure taken from an intermediary source needs checking against the original.
