What is data hosting location?

Data hosting location is the physical country where your data is stored on the cloud provider's servers. A question that sounds technical and is deeply regulatory: certain data is required by Saudi rules to remain inside the Kingdom, and your system's performance is affected by the physical distance between your user and the server.
Why it matters
Regulatory: Saudi data protection rules (and e-invoicing rules specifically) include requirements on the storage location of certain data, some of which demand in-Kingdom hosting. The definitive references are the Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA) and the Personal Data Protection Law, plus ZATCA's requirements on invoice data - not to be relied on from any general article without verifying the applicable regulations.
Operational: a server in Riyadh responds to a user in Jeddah faster than one in Frankfurt - a difference felt in daily work (opening a report, loading a page, processing an invoice through Fatoora).
Governance: data stored in a given country may be subject to its laws (disclosure requests, court orders) regardless of the business's nationality.
What to ask a provider before signing
- Where is my data actually hosted? (Country and cloud provider: AWS Riyadh, Google Riyadh, Azure Riyadh, ...)
- Are there secondary copies in other locations? (For disaster recovery)
- How is e-invoicing data specifically treated?
- What certifications does the data centre hold (ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, any local hosting certification)?
- Jurisdictional exposure: which laws does my data fall under?
Frequently asked questions
Don't all major cloud providers have Saudi regions now?
AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure have opened Kingdom regions - but a provider having a region here doesn't automatically mean your data is in it; the choice is a technical decision made by your system's provider, and it's asked about explicitly.
On-premise on a server in my office - better regulatorily?
Not necessarily - it may miss the certifications, uptime commitments, and automated backup that enterprise hosting provides. Institutional hosting is often more secure than an office server without specialists.
